My grandfather passed away in 2018. He was very dear to me and helped raise my siblings and me. After he passed, whenever we’d see a cardinal, we’d say, “Hey look, a Pops bird!” And without a doubt, I’d feel a little sweep of joy and feel him a little closer.

Cardinals have a way of feeling like messengers from beyond — little reminders of the people we love who are no longer physically here. To me, they carry a feeling of safety, love, and hope, and remind us that the memories we shared with those we’ve lost allow a piece of them to continue living alongside us.

​

When you spot a beautiful Northern Cardinal, does it make you smile? Do you stop for a moment to admire it? The next time one crosses your path, I encourage you to really look at it and notice how it makes you feel.
